Shé (蛇) who hears the sounds of the world
Year of the Snake Chinese calligraphy performance and workshop at NEO LUNAR
2.1. 2025
In honor of Guanyin, the transgender Chinese bodhisattva of compassion, I wrote Chapter 25 of the Lotus Sutra using Nüshu (女書 or “women’s script”), a secret matrilineal language developed by women in Jiangyong, Hunan. The sutra invokes the powers of Guanyin, whose name translates to “she who hears the sounds of the world,” to free all sentient beings from suffering.
I also offered a workshop including an introduction to the history, materials, and basic techniques of Chinese calligraphy, the ancient art of writing 書法 (shūfǎ), which originated from Shang dynasty oracle bone inscriptions.
NEO LUNAR is a Lunar New Year celebration in Oakland where tradition meets Asian-futurism, produced by Baba’s House, The Laughing Gems, and Yăng Shēng.
